Lighting

The cloud cover allowed sunbeams to come through and cast great shadows accentuating the ocean colors with an approaching storm coming. I used a ND filter to help slow the shutter speed so the wave action would be softened and a slower shutter speed could be accomplished to give the fan accent.

Equipment

Canon 7D,Sigma 10-20mm lens,Tripod, Neutral Density #9 filter, one second

Inspiration

It was a day that threatened rain and I love going to the beach when the clouds are dramatic. I had seen other photos taken at this great beach and this was my first time going to photograph it. The waves were coming in spurts through the rocks and I was hoping to catch an interesting pattern. I was happy to catch this one just right.

Editing

Yes, I use Photoshop5 and Lightroom3 with slight adjustments to contrast,recovery,clarity and defringe set to all edges to promote sharpness. I also did some dodging in PS5 to bring out highlights in the rocks.

In my camera bag

My Canon 7D, Sigma 10-20mm lens,Canon EF 24-105mm L lens,50mm lens and other various lenses at times. I use two ND filters, the ND 9stop which I used for this photo and the Ice ND1000 I(my favorite for really long exposures). Automatic shutter release to go with my tripod.

Feedback

Get outside when the clouds are out. There are always great scenes to capture then. Use a tripod and an automatic shutter release. Buy a ND filter 9 stops or more. It slows the action down. Set your camera to ISO100, lens to f22, check your focus and settings, (mine here were 11mm with my Sigma 10 to 20mm lens, distance 4.3..get your feet wet!) then put the 9 stop ND filter on (it's hard to see through it, so do all your camera settings before). This capture was only 1 second long but long enough to get the fan action without blurring the rest of the ocean. Take lots of shots, use the automatic shutter release and Have fun!
