Your photography is awe-inspiring. Then I read your bio and it brought tears to my eyes. Your work is a wonderful tribute to your daughter who died so tragically young.

Love how you isolate the focus here, the way the front and background stay blurred in contrast to the subject draws the attention so much faster, the lighting and tone color give that extra dimension to this masterpiece...looks just like photography used to be before the digital area...so soulful :-)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small town in South Africa called Nieu-Bethesta. It's claim to fame is that it is the home of the "The Owl Lady", a recluse that spent her time filling her house and garden with sculptures of fantasy owls and other sculptures that she made over a period of 30 years. There is very little in the town, some dirt roads, a hotel ... anyway that's what they call it. While strolling around the dusty roads I spotted this little barefooted girl with her dog just enjoying the morning sunshine, in her own little world.

Time

I just loved the way the early morning shadows played across the dusty road, it was a moment in time - little girl lost in a world of imagination. Early morning just after breakfast.

Lighting

I just wanted to capture the sunlight playing in her hair, positioned myself to be able to capture the shadows and light.

Equipment

I used a Canon 6D with a Sigma 120 - 300 f2.8 lens, I was actually out there to capture some birds.... ended up with this... hence the depth of field.

Inspiration

Well it was just one of those moments where you notice something that captivates you. I must have watched her for at least ten minutes before I took the shot. Her interaction with her dog and the isolation intrigued me.

Editing

I just turned it into a black and white and played with the contrast a bit.

In my camera bag

I go nowhere without two cameras, in my bag I have a Canon 5D Mk 111 and a 6D, I also prefer shooting with prime lenses where possible so I have a 35mm f1.4 L and 135mm f 2L as well as my trusty pair of zooms, Canon 24 - 70 f2.8 L and 70 - 200 f2.8 IS for general shooting. I also have a 85mm, 100mm Macro all Canon L lenses in my bag and when travelling I take the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 with image stabiliser for birds and long shots.

Feedback

Always be aware that you may be looking to shoot a certain subject matter but other opportunities will be around you, never only focus on what you plan to do, be adaptable and go with the flow of the surroundings.
