Location
I captured this Hummingbird at my home here in Southeast Idaho.Time
The time of day for this shot was 8:52 pm making hand held photography without the help of a fill flash difficult.Lighting
I was within four feet of my subjects so I played with underexposing my cameras fill flash. I was surprised this Ruby Throat would come back again and again while bursting the cameras built in flash in his face over and again...Equipment
The camera is a Nikon D610 with a 28-300 mm Nikkor zoom lens. The built in fill flash was used with this photo.Inspiration
This Ruby Throat Hummingbird continued to feed after the sun went down. When this hummingbird flew, it made a distinct rattling noise that made it easy to know if he was coming or going in the very low light. This allowed the camera to be pre-focused and ready when the bird approached the feeders. The sound of the bird coming in was a big help.Editing
I typically crop all my images in post processing along with some simple adjustment's.In my camera bag
My sling bag is simple and light. I carry all the simple cleaning supplies along with extra batteries and SD cards. My cleaning supplies consist of a bottle of rubbing alcohol, Q-tips with extra satin cleaning cloths. Not to mention a good bulb type air blower/Rocket. I also keep a reliable small flash light in the bag as well.Feedback
I recommend that the photographer make them selves a comfortable place to perch while waiting for these types of shots. Patients is the key in my opinion.
