Location
This picture was taken in Krattigen, the village in Switzerland where I live. The snowboarder is Gian Simmen, the Olympic Gold Madal winner from Nagano 1998. He lives with his family close to this spot too. If we get the chance to shoot "at home", we take the opportunity. Unfortunately, there is not very often enough snow. So we were very lucky to catch a perfect evening in December 2021.Time
We spent some time in the late afternoon/ early evening at the spot, together with our kids, who jumped too! We were very lucky to get a great atmosphere, first with some red clouds and later, as you can see on this picture, with a special gap between the clouds and the mountains.Lighting
The first shots were taken with available light. But at the end of the session it got darker. So I gave a strobe to my daughter. She lay down behind the kicker and pointed the light at Gian while he jumped. So we could light the flying snow and the rider to let it pop out against the darker clouds.Equipment
I used my Sona A7RIII with the 24-70 2.8 GM lens. The strobe was a Godox V860, fired with a Godox wireless trigger.Inspiration
Gian and I both love Snowboarding and we try to shoot together as often as possible. With families and jobs there is never enough time. So it's perfect, if we find perfect conditions in front of our doors!Editing
I did some post processing in Lightroom, but due to the light of the strobe, ther wasn't too much to do.In my camera bag
When I go Snowboarding, I try to keep my equipment as light as possible. Normally, I only take my Sony A7RIII and mostly my 24-70 lens with me. If a spot is as close as this one, it's no problem to carry some strobes and triggers too... ;-)Feedback
To get the perfect light outside together with good snow conditions, you have to be lucky. Just take the chance to go out and shoot as often as possible and give it a try. Know your equipment so you are ready, when everything comes together!
