Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the LaSalle River in Winnipeg MB. I try to bring a camera with me whenever I go on a kayak excursion.

Time

Later in the day is my favourite time for photography, because of the long shadows and the beautiful saturated colours from the setting sun.

Lighting

Later in the day is my favourite time for photography, because of the long shadows and the beautiful saturated colours. This is all nothing but natural lighting, and nature and timing did most of the work.

Equipment

This was just captured on my cell phone! Being in a kayak I had to bring what was practical, convenient, lightweight and not cumbersome or valuable.

Inspiration

Nature is always inspiring! Especially on the water. The glorious golden color of the changing leaves with the lighting of the slowly setting sun, and the ripples on the water begged for this photo to be taken. I also saw figurative shapes in the trees, so that offered a unique element. It was the right time of day to be in that exact spot.

Editing

I like to boost the saturation and play with histogram to give a fuller and richer quality to the image, which is closer to what my eyes see in real life. Boosting the contrast also helps to bring out certain textures and give it a more earthy and organic feel.

In my camera bag

Normally I use a canon body with a 75-300 mm lens, the stock 35-80 mm lens, a second point and shoot automatic camera, and a mini tripod, if the need arises for low lighting conditions.

Feedback

Keep your camera handy and accessible, as it is annoying to always have to dig into your pack to pull it out at every turn. But also make sure it is protected as you are on the water! And use the wrist strap, as you definitely don’t want to drop it! It can be tricky to stabilize as you are in a rocky and shaky vessel, as well as drifting in the current, so do your best to remain motionless. Anticipate the sway, and then just let yourself “drift into the frame” and click.
