Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland, at the bottom of the Royal Mile, near Palace Holyroodhouse.

Time

Late afternoon.

Lighting

The natural lighting conditions were ideal, on a bright but overcast day, typical of Scotland weather. The cloudy sky provided natural diffused lighting with no hard shadows, and added to the perfect mix of light and dark tones, bringing out the detail of the clothing and the stonework, creating depth and definition while at the same time allowing the subjects to fit into their environment seamlessly.

Equipment

Canon EOS 35mm SLR body, 35-80mm lens, black & white film, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

I have always been interested in street photography, and Edinburgh offers some of the most interesting cityscapes, and street people. These two individuals actually lived in the cemetery and slept under cover of the large sarcophagi that are typical of European cemeteries. I had befriended them and wanted to capture their spirit, and these characters quite naturally took to the photo shoot, and without wanting anything in return. This is one of my favourite moment captures, both technically and conceptually.

Editing

Just a minimal amount of contrast boost, to give the architecture some life and definition, and some hue adjustment, as the black and white print had discoloured slightly. The photo has not been cropped, as i have learned to compose tight and in-frame due to my analog background and experience with film and slide transparency.

In my camera bag

Canon 35mm SLR eos body, and lots of slide and black & white film stock! Canon 75-300mm lens, Canon 35-80mm lens, mini tripod, and polarizing lens. As well as a pocket-sized point and shoot camera, for more stealth photo opps. At the time I was backpacking Europe and tried to keep my equipment minimal and lightweight.

Feedback

There is a definite art to capturing people in their natural environment in a way that allows them to feel comfortable and encourages them to act natural, especially if they have no modelling experience, and even more so if there are obvious cultural and economic differences present. You have to spend some time with your subject beforehand, make them feel at ease, listen to their stories, and invest in them as people before you even pull out the camera. With that trust in place, they will open up, and as a result you will get an opportunity to see their personality shine through! The photo is now a genuine keepsake of the experience that you shared, and becomes more than just "getting the shot".
