Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on top of the dam at South Holston Lake near Bristol Tennessee.

Time

Late afternoon on one of those beautiful late autumn days. On our last ride of the season, as we were crossing over the South Holston Lake Dam. We stopped to take in the surrounding Mountains and the lake.

Lighting

It was just one of those beautiful late in the fall days. You know the kind of fall day that the sun throws those low, golden tinted rays and creates long shadows. We were taking a break from the days ride and snapping a few selfies with the gorgeous mountainous background. I was lucky enough to catch the sun light at the right moment.

Equipment

The only thing I had with me that day was my phone. Yeah, a Samsung s10e. I had no intentions of a photo shoot that day, so my camera bag was at home. We just were out that day to ride and enjoy the sun.

Inspiration

It was just the way the late afternoon rays were hitting on the motorcycles matte black paint. That's all it took and I was up walking around that bike like a stalker. Camera or not I couldn't ignore the glow that washed over the bike during those few minutes.

Editing

I did do a little, but keep in mind on a phone post processing is slightly limited. That being said, I increased the contrast to beef it up little. Then changed it to B&W to bring out a little drama.

In my camera bag

I have a very minimized amount of equipment, that I carry. Usually a few lenses, an extra battery, cleaning supplies, camera and a clean plastic bag which is used for a rain or ground cover. Often times having really great composition skills can replace some types of equipment.

Feedback

I think its all about Composition and Light. As a lover of natural light the best advice I have is always be on the lookout for an opportunity to capture lights beauty. Composition ; Don't be afraid to get down on the ground or climb up on a big rock or just get in crazy awkward positions to capture the shot. Also try to not leave home without some type of camera.
