Hi Judy thankyou. I was using a 400mm lens and had it out to 176mm so fairly close to the boat. It was taken at Merimbula on the NEW South Wales south coast. We are heading down there again next week so hoping for a repeat perfomance.

Location
This photo was taken whilst on a whale watching trip at Merimbula which is on the New South Wales south coast.Time
There was two trips on this particular day morning and afternoon and judging from the light on the whale I am sure this shot was taken whilst on the morning trip so around mid morningLighting
On a whale watching trip you cannot do anything about the lighting, I was just lucky on this day whilst a little overcast there was still good lighting.Equipment
This shot was taken on a Canon 80D camera with a Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 L IS USM lens. It was taken at 1/2000 sec, f7.1 at 176mm and ISO400. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I had been on a whale watching trip the year before and whilst whales were spotted there was no breaching which I was hoping for so I backed up again the following year and so lucky I did as this whale breached a number of times and so close to the boat. It was such a joy to watch these magnificent creatures in action. At one stage I put the camera down just to watch and enjoy nature at its best. The camera was not down for too long though.Editing
This image has had a auto balance and auto sharpen in ACDC.In my camera bag
I normally carry two Canon camera bodies an 80D and 90D together with two telephoto Canon lenses a 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS USM and 15-85mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS USM as well as a macro 100mm 1:2.8 L IS USM. I also carry a canon flash and tripod on short hikesFeedback
Whales do not perform on cue so be patient. Keep the camera up and ready as the action can happen at any time without notice. I would have the camera ISO set to auto with a high speed on burst as you do not have time to do camera settings if you are lucky enough to have breaching whales around you. It is also a good idea to have a camera cover on to prevent any sea spray getting on your equipment.
