Location
This photo was taken on the evening of May 1, 2018, in Paris, France.Time
I took this shot around 9 PM local time - just in time for the nightly light show.Lighting
The lighting was a bit difficult since the Eiffel Tower, lit up in thousands of bright lights, was set against a dark/dusk sky.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark IV with a EF16-35 f/2.8L USM II lens mounted on a Really Right Stuff travel tripod.Inspiration
I wanted to get the Eiffel Tower lit up during the nightly light show and it was impressive. I wanted to leave France with a photo of an iconic landmark.Editing
I used LightRoom for color balance and some general contrast adjustments and Photoshop was used to blend the multiple shots of the lighting sequence in one frame. Luminosity masks were also used to adjust for blown-out highlights. In my camera bag
My Canon 5D IV and either the 16-35, 24-70, or 70-200 are usually in my bag. I will occasionally carry various long-exposure ND filters or polarizers.Feedback
The lighting was by far the most difficult aspect of this photo because it is hard to get all the Eiffel Tower lights in one shot without overexposing the image. My advice is to take multiple shots and blend them in Photoshop. That will ensure you don't overexpose the image and you'll have more developing options if one of the frames gets overexposed. The key for this type of photo is to shoot during the entire event; it is better to have more photos than you need rather than not have enough.
