I am now getting around to working on my photos from my trip to the PNW from September 2017 and yep, I had to make a stop here to see where the Haystack rock formations that were at the beginning of the Goonies. I spent most of the morning walking around Cannon Beach taking in the cool breeze of the Pacific and enjoying my time out West. More photos to come as time permits.

I took this photo at Cannon Beach in Oregon.Time
This photo was taken a day after I arrived in Astoria, Oregon. I planned to get some rest after a long flight and wake up the next day to scout a good location for a sunset shot. I didn't anticipate the Labor Day weekend traffic and I reached Cannon Beach later than I expected. I spent about an hour or so walking up and down the beach looking for a good spot to set up a sunset shot and ended up taking this shot as a test-shot. The photo was taken on September 4, 2017, at 1:12 PM.Lighting
This shot was originally shot as B-roll footage and never intended to be processed into a developed print. It wasn't until months and months later while I was going through my shots from this trip that I might have a shot worth processing.Equipment
I used my Canon 5D Mark IV, an EF 16-35 f/2.8L II USM lens, and a Lee Big Stopper 10 stop ND filter. The camera was set up on a Really Right Stuff tripod and ball head.Inspiration
The inspiration behind this shot was "The Goonies." I love this movie and it has never gotten old for me. Lately, I have gotten into the habit of watching it to pass time on long flights. Since I was staying in Astoria for two days AND "the Goonies Rock" was an hour's drive away, I had to go and see it for myself.Editing
Most of my photos involve some type of processing, but with this photo, less was more. A few curve adjustments were made for contrast before using Nik Silver Effex Pro 2 for the black and white filter. A few more curves and levels adjustments were made to achieve the final result.In my camera bag
I normally shoot landscapes, so I always keep my Canon 5D Mark IV with the 16-35mm f/2.8L or the 24-70 f/2.8L. When I am feeling especially adventurous and think I am going to shoot portraits, I will pack my 70-200 f/2.8L, but due to the weight, it mostly stays at home. My Really Right Stuff TFC-14 is always attached to my bag and because of its lightweight; it always goes wherever I go. I try to keep my pack down to a minimum and I have learned the hard way that too much gear not only slows you down but gets in the way.Feedback
Shooting long-exposures during the day combined with using a long ND filter has a bit of a learning curve and can be frustrating, but can have rewarding results. My advice is to get PLENTY of shots and don't be afraid to push yourself (and your camera) beyond what you think the limits are. You might be surprised by the results!
