Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee.

Time

I took this photo on December 17, 2018, at 7:51 AM from a highrise building.

Lighting

Foggy mornings in December are a usual occurrence in Memphis, especially along the Mississippi River, and I happened to be on the east side of the building at just the right time. I've seen and photographed the western view from the building, which faces the River, but never had much of an opportunity to catch the sun lighting up the fog. I happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Equipment

They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and that was the case the morning this photo was taken. I shot this with an iPhone 7.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photo was the beauty of the scene; it was rare for me to be at this vantage point. Photographically speaking, everything about this morning was perfect-morning light, fog, the buildings--all of it lent itself for a great photo. My only regret was I didn't have my proper camera.

Editing

Adjustments for tone, color, and contrast were all made on the mobile version of Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I carry a mountain of gear with me--my Canon 5D Mark IV and the accompanying lenses, etc. (16-35 f/2.8L, 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L). However, on this day, I only had my iPhone and rather than not get the shot, I improvised and used what I had.

Feedback

You don't have to have the best gear to take that magical photo--all you need is to be at the right place at the right time (and a little luck). Don't be afraid to try something different because you don't have your "real" camera with you. You don't know what you might miss and never be afraid to fail--that's where growth happens!
