Location
There is a small lake south and west of Rocky Mountain House in Alberta,I have been a regular visitor for quite a few years because of it's location and layout. The main reason I enjoy it so much is the wildlife in and around it and the fact that there are no motorised boats, bikes, quads, trods and noisy clods allowed.. It's only about two hours drive away from home but it's a different world than the rat race of a city. It's high enough in the mountains that there is no radio or cell phone reception and there are no facilities other than an outhouse. The peace and quiet allow you to forget your problems and smell the roses.Time
I'm an early bird, and am up and at 'em before the sun rises. This way I can have the fire going and the coffee perking and be ready to paddle as soon as there is enough light to get to the other end of the lake where the loons like to stay close to their nest. there has always been only one pair of loons on the lake and they defend it as theirs and only theirs.Lighting
This shot was simply happening to be at the right place at the right time. I had followed a family of ducks into a small bay but then realised it was too dark to even identify them and resumed going towards the now sunlit end of the lake. As I was easing out of the little bay, the silhouette of the gravel bar caught my eye and I thought it looked like a good shot, so I did a quick lens change, took a few shots from my canoe and proceeded towards the loon calls.Equipment
At that time I had had my favourite Nikon D- 90 and used a Nikon 18-55 zoom with no tripod (because I was in my canoe and the lake-shore was too steep to land and set-up)Inspiration
The difference in amount of light and the colour of the sky from within that little bay was the real eye-catcherEditing
Often times I like to crop and centre something in a shot or even try to improve the focus and contrast but as a rule I don't alter what I shot.In my camera bag
I now have a D-300 as well as a D-90 and a 18-55 zoom as well as a 50-500 zoomFeedback
I've found that the harder I try to capture something in particular the harder it is to accomplish so basically I just go with the flow and look for the woods not the trees
