Behind The Lens
Location
This was in the stunningly beautiful and oldest redwood grove in the world; The Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County, California.Time
I was living in Northern California for a bit, and Humboldt County was about a 3 hour drive from where I was at. If I remember correctly I left early in the morning so this had to be around mid day.Lighting
The lighting was actually super harsh! It was a very bright day (and also mid-day) so I really had to find the right area that gave me the perfect amount of shade, but luckily this place has trees everywhere ha!Equipment
For this photo I used a Sony A7RII paired with the incredibly versatile FE 24-70mm GM Sony lens! I actually sold my car for this camera and lens a few years ago and never looked back ha! I definitely used a tripod (I have a couple of different sized travel tripods I carry around places), and then photoshop for the edit :)Inspiration
So, every year on May 4th social media is filled with memes playing off the popular star wars phrase 'May the force be with you' but instead saying 'May the 4th be with you'. I wanted to take an image and make it look like I was using the force, and post that for May 4th, 2017. The idea was to create a vanishing point within the crystal ball, and then make it look like I'm using the force to accomplish this. Hopefully I nailed it ha!Editing
Post-processing is maybe my favorite part! For an image like this, it definitely is! These days I have a much more advanced way of going about things, but this was actually one of my first ever photoshop edits! It took me a ton of tries and I only utilized destructive editing techniques ha (which is why it took me so long). However, it was a fantastic learning experience!In my camera bag
I'm always rocking my Sony A7RII/FE 24-70mm GM combo! Sometimes I'll switch to a 50mm or a zoom if need be, but I love versatility! I also love bringing my Mavic Pro drone everywhere I can! This adds several unique perspectives to almost any scenario. Then I tend to bring appropriately sized tripod(s), always extra batteries, always extra memory cards, plenty of soft cloths (for lens cleaning), 2 different types of camera straps, photography devices (i.e., crystal balls, magnifying glass, telescope), notepads, tape, sharpies, water, snacks, and really anything I might need/feel like carrying. How do I remember to bring all these things you might ask? Checklists. Download a checklist app and make checklists! You'll never forget a thing!Feedback
Art is a derivative! You are inevitably inspired by what you see, and by your surroundings. Keep it as original as possible, but don't be afraid to experiment with ideas to practice editing techniques! Developing your style and sense of creativity is key! So, be inspired and try new things. Also try old things. It's the only way to create the space for those fresh ideas! Then hit me up, and show me how much cooler your shot is now that you've seen mine!
