This picture was taken in Iceland on Sólheimasandur, on a black sand beach which gives you the chance to play with contrasts. Twisted wreckage from an old airplane crash. On Saturday Nov 24, 1973 a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane was forced to land on Sólheimasandur’s black sand beach in the south of Iceland after experiencing some severe icing.Time
It was on a cloudly morning, where some sunlight came through the clouds, but really softly. The light was kinda good, not having much direct sun light was perfect to get a good exposition to create this contrasts between black, white and greys.Lighting
The light was kinda good, not having much direct sunlight was perfect to get a good exposition and be able to create this contrasts between black, white and greys. The point was not having direct sunlight above the airplane, to not overexpose the white of the airplane, and to play with this lighting to create a nice contrast.Equipment
It was taken with my Canon 100D and a Manfrotto tripod. I think it was also shot with my old 18-55mm lens.Inspiration
I loved the contrast between the black sand and the white of the airplane and the sky with clouds. Also the contrast of that man standing there, like a mysterious man in a strange place. When I saw that man climbing there, I rushed as fast as I could to take the picture withouth he saw me.Editing
No, the picture was shot already in monochrome, and I didn't process it.In my camera bag
It depends of the trip, but normally an old analogic 50mm Nikkor, and a 55-250mm Canon.Feedback
There are some places that invite you to shoot in black and white, because it can become a strong and expressive composition. Like in this picture, if you see in your mind a potencially good composition because the contrasts, shoot already thinking in the black and white.
