Just before this trip to visit a Least Tern Colony I had in my mind "the" photo I wanted to capture. I figured if there were a lot of chicks running around it shouldn't be too hard to capture a parent feeding a chick. Well I sure was wrong. First off these birds are fast, especially the chicks. If the adult happened to land close to the chick by the time I would get the lens pointed at them the handoff happened already. Next it was all about position. I had numerous opportunities when I had the birds in focus but the chick would be in the shadow of the adult or completely hidden by the adult because they were facing the wrong way. DIdn't these birds know I wanted this photo! It finally happened about an hour after I started shooting. Everything lined up and I captured an adult feeding its young chick a Sand Eel with just the right angle and nice lighting. Taken in Belmar, New Jersey
