Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at my neighbor's farm

Time

It was late morning on an overcast day

Lighting

Flat light can be boring. Shooting in this type of situation I tend to bracket my shots even though there is no contrasty lighting to deal with --- although one must consider contrast in the subject itself. I find that a bit of under-exposure brings up more saturated color.

Equipment

Shot with my old Nikon D100 and a short range zoom at 45mm...nothing else.

Inspiration

I have been photographing this bull for years. Even though it is my neighbor's, I like it as though it's my family pet --- and very friendly. As with any portrait, the better you know your subject (and personality), the better the portrait.

Editing

In editing, I cropped to bring up the head, and added a dark vignette to hide the bull stuff on the ground.

In my camera bag

I believe in traveling light --- as light as possible ---without compromising the project. All Nikon equipment, tripod, monopod, and various accessories required for a specific shoot.

Feedback

If possible, get to know as much about your subject as possible, pre-plan, take notes...be prepared for the unknown...especially with animals --- tame or wild.
