I have seen so many photos of this place. I would love to get there sometime. You did a fantastic capture of this. Love your portfolio.

You will need an off road vehicle with plenty of clearance and an extra tire but it's worth the adventure!

I have this Mill hanging in my living room. I think I like your rendition better. Love the green in the leaves of the trees. Really makes the old wood mill pop! Excellent job.

Location
This photo was taken at a place called the Crystal City, an old marble mining town near Marble, Colorado. Beautiful area!!Time
I'd say around noon or a litter there after.Lighting
I was particularly worried about the sky that day being so sunny, and on a short time frame to grab a shot and let others step in for there own. I don't know how the exposure came out so good, but I sighed in extreme relief when I started to work of the shots from that day.Equipment
I believe I used a Canon 28-135mm lens on a 5D Mark II. I usually have a Lee polarizer, and a 1 stop gradual neutral density filter by Lee over the sky.Inspiration
I've always heard about the Crystal City, but the name alone was what drew me to it. One day some friends and I loaded up and went off roading (the only way to access this place), and I was in complete awe at the beauty. It was one of my most cherished memories still to this day.Editing
I can't really remember ALL that I did, but my normal workflow is to get any chromatic aberration out of the image and revive the highlights and shadows to a more natural feel. That way the photo expresses more of what I, myself saw, vs the cameras interpretation. In my camera bag
I carry the Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon16-35mm 4.0 lens, Lee polarizer, Lee 1,2 and 3 stop grad ND filters, Lee Big Stopper, a Canon 430 ex ii flash, two pocket wizards, a nodal rail, the color checker passport, Sekonic L-478 DR light meter with 5 degree spot viewfinder, and a Sirui tripod with tripod head. I absolutely love my gear and would suggest any of it to the hardcore photographer!Feedback
Although with this particular shot I was rushed (or at least felt rushed), always pay close attention to the sky. I've been in situations where I begin to pack up my bag and look up, only to see the the lighting finally reach perfection and then disappear before I can set back up. Patience is the key when it comes to outdoor photography, and keeping an eye in the sky will help you to know how much time you have left before the right cloud comes, or goes. Also I would say following the rule of thirds is very important. Yes, photography is an art, and art shouldn't have rules, BUT the thirds principle is a fundamental lesson to be learned and practiced. Much like builders use 16" spacing for wall studs, we as photographers must place key components of the scenery in such a way that they naturally catch the eye and draw interest to the scenery. I hope you've enjoyed!! Keep on clicking!!
