Location
I took this image on the edge of the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is an amazing country with volcanoes in abundance. There are so many opportunities for great photography, landscape as well as nature and street.Time
The sun is setting in the back ground in the end of January 2015.Lighting
Because the sun was hidden a bit behind the smoke from the volcano, I was able to shoot directly at it and get the perfect silhouette of my travel companion.Equipment
I used my Nikon D800 handheld with a 24-70mm at 24mm. ISO200 with shutter speed at 1/250 sec. and f/13 for a decent depth of field.Inspiration
I was trying to capture the feeling of standing there - at the edge of the volcano, looking down into the smoking crater, smelling the sulfur - just in awe of the power of nature! And something was really missing, when I tried, just taking a picture of the landscape. However, when I captured one of my travel companions standing there, the image made much more sense to me.Editing
I did all post-processing in Lightroom, and only minor adjustments. I lightened the shadows on the ground a bit, removed a small flare, added a bit of clarity and vibrance, straightened the horizon and cropped it a little. In my camera bag
I always bring my Nikon D800, with a minimum of my 24-70mm f/2.8 and my 70-200mm F/4 (it's much lighter than the f/2.8). Anything else depends on the trip or job.Feedback
Finding the right location, at the right time of the day, is mayor. Knowing how to use the light meter in your camera is also important, in order to achieve the silhouette.
