This was a case of being in the right place at the right time, and having my camera ready for a shot like this. I Had it set on the effects for sports and continuous release mode.

Thank you. There was someone on an ATV who spooked them and they just happened to run my way. Actually they passed within about 10 feet of me.

Thank you. I have a D5100 that i purchased about 10 years ago. I retired about 7 years ago and being on fixed income it is unlikely that I will upgrde.

I recently saw a white tail deer. It ran so fast, and it jumped over a fence. It was exciting to watch, and impossible to photograph. I congratulate you on taking a photo of it.

Location
This photo was taken while hiking in the woods near my house in Warren, Pennsylvania.Time
It was late in the afternoon as evidenced by the long shadows from the trees on the snow.Lighting
It was natural light from the sun and reflection from the snow cover.Equipment
This was taken with a Nikon D5100 using a AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G lens.Inspiration
There was no premeditation about this shot. This was a case of being in the right place at the right time, and having my camera ready for a shot like this. I quite often see wildlife while hiking in these woods so I had my Nikon D5100 set on the effects for sports and continuous release mode.Editing
The only post processing I did was to convert from RAW to jpg and resize for upload to ViewBug.In my camera bag
I rarely carry a bag full of equipment as most of my shots are impromptu. Besides the 70-300mm lens used for this shot I also have a AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G lens, a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 flash, several different filters, and two different sized tripods..Feedback
Always be ready to capture impromptu shots like this. Even if you don't have a DSLR with you, you might have a cell phone with witch to capture a shot like this. I do end up getting quite a few good shots with my cell phone.
