LES BRAVES, the sculpture by Anilore Banon, on Omaha Beach, under a threatening sky, a monument, to the Americans soldierss who liberated France in 1944.

The monument was erected on the beach, near the original monument placed here many years ago.

It was commissioned by the French government to celebrate the 60th anniversary in 2004. It consists of three elements.

The Wings of Hope

So that the spirit which carried these men on 6th June 1944, continues to inspire us, reminding us that together it is always possible to change the future.

Rise of Freedom

So that the example of those who rose up against barbarity, helps us remain standing strong against all forms on inhumanity.

The Wings of Fraternity

So that the surge of brotherhood always reminds of our responsibility towards others as well as ourselves.

On 6th June 1944, these men were more than soldiers, they were our brothers.

Anilore Banon.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the beach at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. The sculpture, titled Les Braves, was installed for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Since France prohibits any new construction on the beaches and near the shoreline, it was to be a "temporary" installation. After an uproar from just about everybody, it was granted a permanent exemption after years of legal and administrative battles.

Time

A cloudy afternoon

Lighting

Dark clouds in the east made for a somber, stormy mood, while the sculpture itself was still in strong light

Equipment

My old, faithful - at the time - Sony R1

Inspiration

I love this sculpture by Anilore Banon, which absolutely belongs in this hallowed place, and I try to photograph it whenever we are in Normandy. I like it better on cloudy, even stormy days, for the somber mood.

Editing

Increased contrast, and converted to B&W

In my camera bag

Nikon D5200 with 18-55 mm, 10-24 mm and 70-300 mm lenses

Feedback

Try to be there late in the day, when the tourist buses are gone and you will have the beach all to yourself. Walk around the sculpture, get close if you can and shoot from a low angle.
