I took this photo at the Tryp Hotels in Amsterdam 2012. I don't remember the name of the city, however the stairs was a little bit away from the lobby behind the fireproof doors. I only happened upon it as I sometimes prefer to use the stairs instead of waiting on the elevator depending on where my room is.Time
This particular picture was taken at 10:53am according to the metadata. I was travel with a Jamaican artist (Reggae musician) and we had just gotten settled in our hotel rooms. Seeing that it was fairly early, I decided to walk around with my camera in tow as it was my first time in Amsterdam.Lighting
I was just fascinated by both the window light and the lamps in the center. After looking at the scene I decided I prefer the window lights to enter from the top portion of the photograph, rather than below me.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark ii with 24-70mm 2.8L, using only the light available.Inspiration
The back of the hotel had a boxed in courtyard and I wanted to take a couple pictures there. Since the stairs was at that end where I was, I decided to use it but I was completely surprise to find the hotel would have this little gem hidden away. Most hotels with their fireproof doors, their staircase is the usual boring zig zag walkways. But this circular stairs with a sting of lights down the middle and outside light streaming in caught my attention.. It was an image captured for myself that a friend told me I needed to share.Editing
There wasn't a lot of post processing done. I used Photoshop to turn the image Black & White, played with the levels a bit and that was it.In my camera bag
What is in my bag now, I use Canon 7D Mark ii, Canon 5D Mark ii, 24-105mm f4L, 24-70mm f2.8L and 70-200mm 2.8L.Feedback
Travelling? Walk around, look for little items that may seem of little interest to others but could be something to you. Stay out of dark alleys..lol, however don't just look for the "tourist" shots.. I just happened upon that staircase and since, I keep looking for more gems like that. If you like a particular pattern, look for it in different places and in different things..
