2018 UPDATE: My friend has since been diagnosed and has undergone the battle with throat cancer. I had these images, what I had thought backed up, only to have been forever lost. This image is the one one in its existence now. Smoke continue his battle and if f God willing, He will give us one more beautiful morning to spend it together.
This image, along with the Horse Thieves Beware are my first photographs of people. As an amateur, I've strayed away from any type of portrait work or people photography as I live in the North Georgia Mountains and landscapes to me, well, they don't move. LOL. However, I wanted to try something different for an upcoming local photography contest and I knew that the competition for the landscape category and entries would be fierce as I had entered the contest for my very first time in 2013. So, I asked my friend, who enjoys wearing the full cowboy attire if he would help me and what I had in mind. He was so very kind (and patient), along with his horse Santee, with taking my first photo shoot. I entered both of those photos into the 2014 contest and although this one didn't place, it was awarded an Award of Merit. Thank you Smoke for being such a sport!

Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken of my friend "Smoke" and his horse on his small ranch at the base of Cohutta Mountains in the North Georgia. He was so kind enough to allow me to photograph him with "Santee" (the horse) that morning as I was entering a local photography contest and wanted a new challenged. I had never photographed people. As an amateur photographer, I preferred things that didn't move where I could take my time. As my mentor would tell me, to "Breathe & Think."Time
We actually got a later start than what I had wanted. It was around 9:00 a.m. and the sun was rising fairly quickly.Lighting
Luckily we found this nice shaded area for the shot as you can see the sun rising in the background on the mountain.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 800-200mm 2.8. I always use a Gizmo tripod with a Really Right Stuff BH40 ball head.Inspiration
A fellow photographer by the name of Mike Nalley had submitted a beautiful black and white portrait of a cowboy with a herd of sheep dogs by his side the year before. I was so drawn to the photograph and wondered if I could ever remotely capture an emotion of a person, along with composition. I entered this photo into the contest. Mike Nalley was also there and had entered his award winning photographs as well. I knew my "The Cowboy and His Horse" was no match to his and it wasn't as he took 1st place in the "People" category. However, I did pick up an award for "Honorable Mention." I'm pretty proud of myself considering this was my first attempt of photographing people or animals for that matter and I am giving Mike Nalley credit for the inspiration.Editing
Actually, the only post processing was in camera raw as it was submitted for a juried contest.In my camera bag
Everything but the kitchen sink but the big bag stays in the car. Smaller bag with just the camera, maybe 1 lens and filters.Feedback
I live in the rural Appalachian mountains. It's hard for me to find hands-on training. Sure there are so many books, videos, etc. to read and view. However, I learn the best by someone showing me. I didn't have anyone helping me on this one but I just had to remember to "Breathe & Think."
