If they still had the Jaw Dropping award, I'd have given you that one. Wow!

The ice reminds me of whale who have baleen mouths. The clouds are the perfect compliment to the ice. Kudos!

Location
On the shore of Lake Michigan in Racine, Wisconsin a day after a midwinter wind storm that crashed huge waves over large boulders on the shore.Time
The time of day was mid morning and the temperature was well below zero.Lighting
Filtered daylight reflected the the winter blues in the ice.Equipment
I used a Canon 7d with a 10-22mm Canon lens.Inspiration
From a distance I saw what looked like creatures with teeth filled gaping mouths crawling out of lake Michigan. I knew I had to get up close to get a shot. As I crawled on hands and knees in sub zero temperatures over cracking ice that filled gaps between the boulders, gaps that dropped 15 or so feet below the ice, I suddenly did not feel inspired. But in for a penny, in for a pound and I made it to this spot and shot away. When I finished I put my camera around my neck and looked back to where I came. With a heavy sigh I slowly crawled back remembering my cell phone was in my car and hoping like heck I stayed on the sunny side of the ice. This shot also won the second nationwide Canon Imagination contest run by Ron Howard in the "Barrier" category.Editing
Some dodging and burning to get an equal balance of light. I actually had to desaturate the blue a bit.In my camera bag
Just my Canon 7d with my Canon 10-22mm to shoot my series I call "Horizons". Nearly every day for the last 4 years my goal is to get one good vertical landscape. Yes, with a few exceptions, I break the very basic rule of thirds by placing the Horizon in the exact center giving equal attention to the sky as the landscape. Without one the other does not exist. I call it turning landscapes into portraits of nature. I then post the Horizon on my networks to get feedback. To date, in just a few years, my Google+ page alone has received 35 million views and along with my other sites like Viewbug have gotten thousands upon thousands of comments to help me dial in the pulse of a worldwide audience. To say this feedback has helped is an understatement.Feedback
My advice is to never leave your cell phone in your car while crawling over an ice shelf.
