Iceland weather is as always a surprise, an event and an adventure depending of your viewpoint. Arriving at Landmannalaugar in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, the rain was starting and as a 'true hiker' I thought the water proof pants would just be annoying and warm on the hike. Standing on the top of the hill (Brennisteinsalda, 855m) and looking out on this amazing landscape in extremely strong winds and a pouring rain I began to have second thoughts....walking the miles back to the Landmannalaugar camping site more soaked than ever, those second thoughts were now cut in stone. Lesson learned. What I also learned was that this landscape is something I need to experience more than once and need to come back to explore even more. Scale of the place?...see the lone hiker in the bottom of the frame.

Thanks Brenda!..and yes, it is very unique. It unfortunately rained from the time I arrived at Landmannalaugar till I left again. Funny part is that I, due to the rain, walked with my head down looking at where I placed my feet. When I paused to get my breath I turned around and saw this view. I will for sure try to get back in better weather and if not for the photo opportunities then for the experience of this beautiful landscape.

Location
The photo is taken in Landmannalaugar in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Iceland and standing on the top of the hill (Brennisteinsalda, 855m).Time
The photo is taken in the late afternoon around a quarter to five.Lighting
As the rain was pouring down the light was not the best and combined with very strong winds it made way for a special experience. I was on the verge of calling it a day, when I turned on the path (mostly to get the face out of the wind and rain) and saw this view.Equipment
I used the Sony A1 camera hand-held for this photo while trying to protect the camera from the rain. Due to the intense wind I had to sit down on a big rock and then place my arms on the knees in order to keep the camera steady enough to get this shot.Inspiration
I have been wanting to go to Landmannalaugar for a long time and the highlands in general. I just came from the Sigöldugljúfur canyon with its beautiful waterfalls (which is on the way to Landmannalaugar), and as I have seen these photos of the rhyolite mountains by other photographers before, I wanted to see what I could get myself. Unfortunately I missed out on the sunny and bright day which would make the colors pop some more in the photo, but then I got a photo with a special mood instead and are very happy with the result.Editing
Post processing has been minimal, just a slight crop and removal of dust/rain spots. In my camera bag
My camera is the Sony A1 (Sony, please bring that firmware update you owe us!) and my lenses are the 16-35mm GM, the 24-105mm G, the 90mm macro lens and the 200-600 mm all from Sony. Tripod and tripod head are from Gitzo and magnetic filters from Kaze.Feedback
In the extremely heavy rain (that continued for more than 2 hours) and the strong, stormy wind I was freezing as never before. Any ideas of being the big hero photographer coming back with amazing 'art' was very far from my mind. What WAS in my mind though, was the joy of actually being there and experiencing the place I had wanted to see for so long and had saved up the money to go to. You can have the very best of equipment and the best skills and mindset...but if you are not on the actual location, you will get nothing out of your efforts. Could I have planned it better and maybe have better clothing for the rain?...yes. So dont be afraid or hold back to plan every detail before going to a location. There are a lot of apps, Google earth etc. to use and secure that you will be 'in the right place at the right time'. What the weather then brings you is simply the mood of your photo and your creativity does the rest.
