Location
The photo was taken at Alice Lake in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The lake is reached via the Alice-Toxaway Loop trail that begins at Petit Lake in Idaho's Sawtooth Basin. The loop is a three-day backpack and Alice Lake is either a first night or last night camping spot, depending on the direction you take the loop.Time
The photo was taken around 9 a.m. in mid-October. I started shooting the scene around 8:52 a.m., when the sun was just lighting up the very tops of the peaks and continued shooting until the mountains were in full sunlight and the wind had come up, making ripples on the water, around 9:15 a.m. I thinLighting
There wasnt a cloud in the sky anywhere so the sun was as bright as the rising sun can get.Equipment
Photo was taken with a Nikon D300 DSLR with a Nikkor 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 ED zoom lens. The zoom was set at 18mm.Inspiration
The scene was so breath-takingly beautiful I had to try to capture it.Editing
No post-processing. What you see is the digital image captured by the camera. I did do quite a bit of bracketing to ensure that I got an image where the sunlit peaks were not burned out.In my camera bag
I carry around a D300 and D70 digital cameras, 18-140mm Nikkor 3.5-4.5 AF VR ED lens, Nikkor 70-200mm Nikkor f2.8 AF VR ED lens, a Nikkor 105mm f2.8 AF Macro lens,Nikon TC-20EIII 2x teleconverter, a Nikon SB6 flash, extra camera and flash batteres, ND filters, lens cleaning stuff, portable tripods, etc. The lens I took this photo with is history, which is a bummer. It was a kit lens, but it was real sharp.Feedback
Don't be afraid to bracket and experiment with different shutter speed and aperature setting combinations. Expose for the highlights.
