The garden spider is a good example of an orb web spider. In the fall, the webs stand out because of the dew. To make such a web, the spider starts with a sturdy square in which it spans spokes. She lays auxiliary wires over it, which she then eats and replaces with a spiral of sticky wires. Those wires have different colors, which glow beautifully in the sunlight. Thanks to the wax layer on her hair, the spider itself does not stick to her knit.
