Oystercatchers are sturdily built, black and white waders commonly found on the coast, but also commonly found inland. The beak of the oystercatcher wears hard but also grows fast. It can change shape through the food. For example, the beak becomes more pointed when an oystercatcher pricks for leatherettes and worms in the summer. On the mudflats, such a beak is also useful when you prick for worms, but in winter many oystercatchers eat shellfish such as cockles. And then the beak gets blunter, because they use it as a chisel.
