The Château de Fontainebleau, located 55 km southeast of the center of Paris, is one of the largest French royal châteaux. The medieval castle and subsequent palace served as a residence for French monarchs from Louis VII to Napoleon III.
The earliest record of the castle dates from 1137. It took its name from one of the springs.
The residence of 34 kings and two emperors, Fontainebleau is the only château that was lived in by every French monarch for almost eight centuries.
With 1500 rooms, it is one of the biggest châteaux in France, and the most furnished in Europe.
