The name of the Church is actually Kerkje aan Zee, meaning little Church at sea.
De first church was build around 1600, but was taken by the sea.
In 1786 the church was rebuild on the same spot.
At that time Urk was an isle and a part of the municipality of Amsterdam, but since 1940 Urk became part of the mainland, a poulder gained from the sea.
The anchor in front is a tribute to all fishermen that died on sea.
