Photography is just my hobby so I can't afford a real studio or studio equipment. This photo was taken in my living room which I transformed into a mini studio. Materials draped over chairs and camera equipment all over dinning room table. It creates a lot of chaos, but I get better at it each time.Time
This was taken mid morning. Working with babies means working around their schedules. The family arrived at my house early, but it took us an hour to get the baby to sleep.Lighting
I try and work with the available light that I have. My living room has a glass door, and I work the shoot around it. I drape a white bed sheet over the door to limit some of the direct light. I drag all the available lamps from around the house into the room. In addition I used a reflector aimed at the babies head, to created the lighting here.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Xsi, with a Canon 18-55 f3.5 Lens.Inspiration
I was looking for a way to show the bond between a father and his daughter. I made sure to have the dads wedding ring sticking out, to symbolize family.Editing
Because I am shooting in a non studio environment, I have a lot of workarounds. for example, to get the black background, I had the wife hold up a piece of black material, but its not long enough, so In post processing I fill in the rest of the image in black. I also usually need to tweak the white balance and colors due to the lighting in my house. In my camera bag
Being a mom means besides my camera equipment I have lots of other stuff to carry, so I travel with the least amount of camera equipment needed. I recently upgraded to a Canon 70d and a 17-50 2.8 lens which is always with me, and depending on what I plan on shooting I carry either my 50mm macro or my 55-200mm lens.Feedback
Patience and Flexibility. When working with babies these are keys. Babies run by their own clock and don't always want to sleep when we want them to. I you can't get the baby to sleep, try and shoot something a little different. I try and keep the setup as simple as possible. Father holding baby in arms behind a black sheet. One important thing I have learned, Try and keep the babies private parts out of the shot :) Oh, and always bring a change of clothing for everyone involved... I can't tell you how many babies have peed on me.
