Location
Minnesota, On the North Shore of Lake Superior on Stoney Point. The rocks on the shore are covered in ice from waves crashing on them and then freezing.Time
Winter sunrise was about 6:20 am. The sea smoke and blowing snow made the conditions difficult for the photographer but creates the perfect mood in this scene!Lighting
The light from the sunrise filters through the sea smoke and blowing snow.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Sony a7iv using a Sony 24-105 mm f4 zoom. Winter photography is challenging trying to get the proper camera settings and yet staying warm. The temperature was -4F with a 15-20 mph wind. Dressing with the proper cloths may be more important than what gear I am using. I dress in multiple layers with a waterproof coat and pants on top. I wear insulted rubber boots with ice cleats to help me be safe on the ice covered rocks. My hands are the weakest link. I wear a double layer on the hands with gloves underneath and mittens with removable finger protection on top. I had a full head mask and heavy stocking cap.Inspiration
I purposefully went out to shoot sea smoke at sunrise. I had no idea what I would find on the shore of Lake Superior. The mood of the angry weather was my inspiration.Editing
I process every photo in Adobe Lightroom, Camera RAW and Photoshop. This was a single image that was purposely underexposed. In my camera bag
I did not take any of my other gear on the hike as I knew I could not risk getting my hands frozen. I usually drive with two cameras ready to shoot different lenses. Generally speaking, I have the Sony a7 IV set up with the Sony 200-600 zoom and the Sony a7iii with the Sony 24-105mm. I just replaced the a7iii with an a9II so that will be the large zoom for wildlife.Feedback
