Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during one of my random cruises around the state which landed me in Rockport, Massachusetts. The red fish shack has been around since the 1800s and is said to be the most painted building in the world by artist. Here is a link to read more about this place: https://newengland.com/today/travel/massachusetts/rockport-motif-no-1/?fbclid=IwAR0cvbeXBEDL3rXFSQMinVPm1SwHOifm9cGO4ALjR-6xkSIHAx1xk7Zsgag Enjoy!

Time

I took this photo about an hour after sunset in the month of January.

Lighting

I took this photo as a long exposure and had to adjust the light temperature in post-processing because of the orange/yellow tint of the street lighting and cars that pulled into the lot. No additional lighting was used, but maybe a speed flash "might" have balanced out some of those color tones.

Equipment

Nikon Z6 with the 24-70 F4 lens, tripod, and a trigger remote.

Inspiration

The day before I took this photo I had met two people who had also been out for a drive in the area. I was minding my own and then they had asked me to take a photo of them by the Fisherman Memorial in W. Gloucester, Mass. So I did, followed by small chit-chat and I went on my way. We then ended up at the same local restaurant that was very busy and they had invited me to sit with them at their table. And, why not? So I did! She was a 90 year old woman from Taiwan and he was about 60, from China, but really Americans since they had been here for many years. :-) They shared with me many stories about their lives and families, but my inspiration for this photo was from their adventure that day and that very fish shack was painted on the wall of the restaurant too. She was so proud and was showing me her own photos of that building that she had just taken. I usually don't do lunch with people that I had just met 15 minutes before, but this was worth it! <3

Editing

I did simple post-processing edits in Adobe Lightroom. Nothing to dramatic, but trying to balance the photo from the street lights.

In my camera bag

I don't own any extensive camera gear, so I usually always have my Nikon Z6, 70-200mm f2.8, 24-70mm f4, speed flash, remote trigger, 2 tripods (one malleable and the other sturdy), 10 stop ND filter, Polarizing filter, Lume Cube, extra camera batteries, and the battery charger to charge the batteries in my car.

Feedback

Lighting is what can give everyday things we may not pay much attention to a new life to our visual sensory.
