Location
This was taken on The Solent; the small channel of water that separates the south coast of England with the Isle of Wight.Time
Around 2pm on a winter's afternoon, just after a squall had passed through the straight. The patches of blue and reflections of the sun on the clouds that came through in the face of the water was a magical moment. It was completely spontaneous and unexpected. I was grappling for the camera the moment everything appeared!Lighting
I dropped the exposure ever so slightly to try and bring out more on the contrast.Equipment
Shot on iPhone 8, hand held, no other gadgetry required.Inspiration
Horizons, I think. We set off from the mainland and I immediately began running around this ferry looking for horizons in the water and sky together. Then about 10mins into the journey, the squall came through and I was forced to cease operations. I assumed that was it, but then in the last 10mins before we docked, it died away and revealed this absolutely stunning mix of blue sky, grey remains of squall and beams of afternoon light shining into the back of the clouds and onto the water. It became a tranquil, pastel, candy land. I then tried my best to capture this colour palette as much as the 'horizon'. It was stunning and brief. By the time we had docked, it was gone.Editing
Yes! I dropped back more exposure and increased saturation, as well as push a little bit more blue and yellow within the white balance. All done with the intention to bring out the colour contrasts. I also cropped and reframed to emulate a 'pseudo' symmetry in the reflection that I felt made it feel even more tranquil and elusive. In my camera bag
Just my iPhone 8. I'm obsessed with trying to get the most out of the simplest equipment. I feel many smart phone cameras are now technically capable enough of capturing brilliant shots, especially when the focus is on composition and post editing.Feedback
Always try and imagine how you want the photo to feel. From taking the shot, through to editing. Especially so in shots like this that could easily be less engaging without considered post-editing. I often try to play with the levels of just one or two elements of the composition in line with what i want the photo to make people feel. But that's always subjective. Just having some idea of what you want it to look like is probably the better thing to say. But then the one other really great piece of advice I'm more confident in saying is; always have a bloody camera with you for moments like this that come out of nowhere!
