Location
Along the coast of Isola Delle Femmine, in Sicily. The famed Isolotto was once a hot spot where locals would gather in their free time to relax or party. However, climbing onto it has since become illegal, so now it is an 'Isolotto' from two perspectives. (or an 'Isolatelotto', for those who like to chuckle)Time
Midday, thereabouts. Me and friends had been following the coast line for about 3 hours in 34º, and we were dying. Of course you can't tell that in the photo. And I love that about it. All the pain that led to the moment you see is like the trade off for getting the shot. Really brings home the 'art is sacrifice' idea ????Lighting
Nope, the midday sun does all the necessaries.Equipment
Shot on iPhone 8, no other gadgetry required.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the Isolotto against the degraded carriageway; that minimalist, barren feel. The road was built to accommodate the regular and many people who would swim or boat to the Isolotto, but once the ban of entering the island was introduced, traffic ceased and the road remained as an unnecessarily wide relic; both the past and the present co-existing in the same frame. Sicily is full of these infrastructural juxtapositions.Editing
Yes! using VSCO, I knocked back the contrast a tad and then tried to bring out whites and yellows to make it feel more barren and baked. In my camera bag
Just my iPhone 8. I'm obsessed with trying to get the most out of the simplest equipment. I feel many smart phone cameras are now technically capable enough of capturing brilliant shots, especially when the focus is on composition and narrative over technical brilliance.Feedback
I think this is very much a composition focussed photo. But something that is a consideration is how direct, full sunlight can make a shot very intense, and can work in your favour, depending on what you want... It's not always about finding golden light! :P Always try and think as much as possible about how you want a photo to 'feel' when you take it.
