Palace Het Loo is a palace located on the outskirts of Apeldoorn . The palace was inhabited by members of the Royal Family of the Netherlands until 1975 . As the National Museum it has been open to the public since 1984.
King Willem III , great-grandson of William of Orange , bought the medieval castle Het Loo in 1684 to build a new hunting lodge next to it. The site is particularly suitable for landscaping with waterworks because of the natural water supply from the hills. Jacobus Roman, who would become court architect in 1689, designed a square main building in classicist style, with side wings on either side. Main building and wings were connected by semicircular colonnades. After William III had become king of England, he had the palace extended with four pavilions on either side of the main building connecting the main building with the side wings. The colonnades were moved to the newly landscaped garden. The pavilions contain the royal apartments of William III and Mary Stuart , as well as the dining hall, palace chapel and picture gallery.
