.....Male Elk are notoriously elusive ...even on a refuge ...a better chance is to catch the females grazing .....the male is very cunning and when ever i actually did find one they were far off in the distance ....this encounter was actually about 30 feet away from me and i was always on the ready to run and hide behind a tree or climb one ....it was an over cast day and he was grazing by himself .......they are 650 lbs and the rut was just at its end so ....blood was still higher than normal as they are always ready to fight. .....the encounter lasted at least half an hour with him grazing and always very aware of my presence .....

Hi susaannegudmunds, thank you for the comment. although quite similar in appearance, Rocky Mountain Elk are significantly larger. as well Red Deer are not indigenous, nor are they found in Oklahoma.

....Yes, very strangely here in America, we wrongfully call European Elk .....Moose ...!!! and then we have this equally disturbing habit of calling what you would call a deer an elk....or maybe it's the other way around....i'm so confused now HaHa ha! ...don't ask me why we are so ignorant...
