Location
This photo was taken along the banks of the Cache La Poudre River in Northern Colorado, USA. There is a national heritage area designated for this section of the river to commemorate it's contribution to the advancement of settlements in the area among other things.Time
Around 5:00pm in winter. The river was only partially frozen at this time, allowing for this reflected composition.Lighting
The cloud deck presented a perfect canvas for the brilliant sunset to illuminate the winter sky. The calm, fluid water was a huge bonus for obvious compositional reasons. Taking advantage of situational components such as reflections can help create a more dynamic image.Equipment
Nikon D850 coupled with the Tamron 15-30 f/2.8 G2. Filters: No. Tripod: Yes, Manfrotto element.Inspiration
During winter, tree silhouettes are more pronounced with bare branches that do not block out the sky. While driving home, I noticed the sunset taking shape so I decided to stomp out a quick hike to this bridge. The river was not frozen and the sky was coming alive as I framed up this composition. It's a spot that had been on my radar for a while and once the conditions fell into place I was able to capture this scene. Who doesn't love a good bridge reflection during a vibrant sunset? :)Editing
Many times I will shoot a bracket and blend the HDR image in camera raw to create a more dramatic scene with details not obtained in most single images. Usually 3 - 5 shots are used in the creation of the final image. In my camera bag
My Nikon D850, and usually the Tamron 15-30 and the 24-70 or the 70-200.Feedback
Winter tree silhouettes, calm water, colorful sunset, and a nice bridge are the elements needed to recreate something of this nature. Paired with the equipment and editing mentioned above, you can experiment with your own reflected bridge compositions. Please let me know what kind of shots you come up with, I would love to check them out!
