Location
This photo was taken in a freshly cut hay field on our farm.Time
Late evening but anytime when dark will work.Lighting
The lighting was provided by the sparks flying off the spinning burning steel wool. A 3 second flash was put on my daughter to highlight her under the umbrella.Equipment
My Nikon D750 with a 28-300 (shot wide open at 28) lens mounted on a tripod as this was a 10 second exposure shot. A regular flashlight was used for the light painting of my daughter holding the umbrella.Inspiration
Having played with and photographed burning steel wool previously I wanted something different. I saw a photo where an umbrella was used similar to this and decided to give it a try. I was very happy how this one turned out.Editing
The only post processing for this photo were adjustments for lighting (warmth), shadows and cropping. In my camera bag
I tend to be a minimalist when shooting so will typically only carry what I think I will need. My camera body with everyday lens (currently that is a Nikon D7 II with a 24-70 lens), extra battery, card and a lens cleaning cloth. Many times this forces me to get creative with what I have on me as I might not have exactly what I need. But I also feel this makes me learn more about my equipment which is a good thing. I will throw in other lenses, tripod, etc. depending on what, where and how I am shooting.Feedback
For this type photo definitely think safety. Make sure you are not in an area where things can catch fire and the skin of whomever is spinning the burning steel wool is covered - those sparks are burning metal and are HOT. Having a fire extinguisher nearby is a good thing. This is also a shot where help is definitely needed. This was a family affair for me. My husband was the spinner of the burning steel wool, my daughter was my 'model' with the umbrella, my son-in-law handled the light painting on my daughter with a 3 second burst from a flashlight, and last but not least was my 6 year old grandson supervising from a distance while holding the dog that wanted so badly to bite all those burning sparks flying through the air.
