Glass artist Dale Chihuly (American, b.1941) is renowned for his intricate hand-blown works and stunning large-scale glass installations. Born in Tacoma, WA, Chihuly studied sculpture and glassblowing at the University of Wisconsin, and then at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he later established their glass program. In 1971, Chihuly returned to Washington to co-found the Pilchuck Glass School, where he developed a teamed approach to his sculptures, using several assistants to form multi-part works, enabling him to create monumental pieces spanning large architectural environments. This approach became even more important after a car accident and a subsequent surfing accident, both of which severely impacted his ability to blow glass without the use of assistants.
