Location
I took this photo in my back yard, near a dish with seeds I had set up on the lawn for the birds.Time
It was 4:30 in the afternoon, on an unusually cold January day in east central Florida.Lighting
The setting sun was shining directly on these 4 fiesty juvenile raccoons, providing ample and warm light for this picture.Equipment
I used my Nikon D300 equiped with an 18-200 Nikon Zoom lens, zoomed out to 165MM (about 250mm in 35mm terms) for this shot.Inspiration
Looking out the window to my back yard, I saw these 4 young raccoons moving towards the bird feeder I had set up on the lawn. I grabbed my camera and rushed outside to the porch to get a clear unobstructed photo. The raccoons saw me but were not intimidated in the least. In fact, they set up in this amazing 3-tiered pose and looked up at me in unison with bright eyes, making for a very cute and unusual family portrait! I was fairly close to these guys, less than 30 feet when I stated making images and I managed to get several more nice photos in different positions before they retreated to the nearby garden. This image was the best and most pleasing of the lot.Editing
Very little post processing was needed since the lighting was excellent, the exposure perfect, and the focus was very sharp. I cropped the image slightly and removed the bird feeder dish that was in front of the raccoons. In my camera bag
I generally have my D300 and D500 cameras with an assortment of lenses and filters in my camera bag when I take field trips. But in this case, I grabbed my D300 from the kitchen counter and was out the door quickly to get this amazing image, which is one of my all-time favorites.Feedback
My advice is to be as prepared as you can be at all times with your camera handy, since you never know when such unusual once in a lifetime photo opportunities will arise. If you are not prepared, the subject may fade or disappear before you have time to set up and capture it.
