Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken on Cockburn Street which is in Scotland's Capital, Edinburgh. Cockburn Street is just off The Royal Mile.

Time

This was shot at around 9.30 in the evening. The weather had been very good for a few weeks however the rains fell on the pre planned trip to Edinburgh. Initially I thought this may be a disadvantage but the wet cobbled streets did a great job of reflecting the street lights.

Lighting

Edinburgh's architecture just begs to be photographed and this is especially so when the sun has set and the buildings and cobbled streets are illuminated by both the window and street lights. The light diffusing through the mist and the drizzle rain and the reflection from the cobbles added to the overall atmosphere.

Equipment

The shot was taken with my Nikon D850 and the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 lens. The camera was on a Giottos carbon fiber tripod. The exposure was 6 seconds, ISO 100, f8. The shutter was set for a 2 sec delay to prevent shake.

Inspiration

Edinburgh's architecture would inspire most photographers to take shots in the Capital. I particularly like this area of the city and this buildings shape and structure appeals to me especially for a night shot.

Editing

Yes, I use old versions of Photoshop and Lightroom. Dodging and burning as well as white balance adjustments and I took out a few rain drops that had fallen on the lens.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D850. I generally have my Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2, the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2, A Black Rapid over shoulder strap, a SB-910 speedlight, A few ND filters and Polarizers, spare batteries for the camera and speedlight.

Feedback

For a shot similar to this take a trip to Edinburgh. The architecture is something special. The weather shouldn't be an issue as this shot was taken on a wet evening. There is so much to shoot you'll be spoiled for choice.
