Behind The Lens
Location
I took this shot at Wemyss Bay Railway Station and Ferry Terminal on the Clyde Estuary on Scotland's west coast. The station was built in the 19th century and has magnificent Victorian architecture. Wemyss Bay is a small village around 30 miles from Glasgow.Time
The shot was taken around 3 PM shortly after the train to Glasgow had left so that the platform would be empty. The train you see in the background on the other track is the Royal Scotsman which was on a visit to Wemyss Bay and had been there for a few days.Lighting
The west of Scotland is not known for it's sunshine however that weekend the weather was very kind to us and the sun shone brightly that afternoon resulting in dark and light areas on the platform. As such I did use a bit of fill flash to lighten up the kid's a little.Equipment
I used my Nikon D90 with the 18-105 Nikkor kit lens along with a Nikon SB-910 speedlight used off camera and triggered using Pixel king Pro transceiver and Pixel King X receiver. I had the camera on a Giottos tripod set low to match the kid's height. I used an infrared trigger to activate the camera and prevent camera shake.Inspiration
I had previously seen travel shots with kids but they were mostly done in a studio. I wanted my shot to be taken at an actual location and the small village of Wemyss Bay with it's train station seemed ideal. The Kids are very photogenic so with that and the Victorian architecture I felt it would be a good opportunity for the shot.Editing
The original colour shot looked OK but I always had black and white in mind so I converted to black and white and adjusted contrast a little. I also cropped the image a little keeping the kids central. In my camera bag
In my bag I have my Nikon D90 and the Nikkor 18-105 kit lens. I also carry a few other lenses including my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 (bought second hand), the Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 and my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 although I didn't have the Tokina or the Nikkor 70-300mm on this occasion. I also tend to carry either my SB-700 or SB-910 speedlights and my infrared trigger. Although not in my bag I take my Giottos carbon fibre tripod with me when I go out to shoot.Feedback
I had this shot in mind a month or so before I took it. I had checked out the location and made arrangements with the kids which was easy as they are family and all concerned had plenty of notice. The weather wouldn't be too much of an issue as we were in the train station which is for all intents and purposes under cover (magnificent Victorian architecture with roof of glass and iron construction). So for this particular shot preparation was key - Oh and also to have plenty of patience with the children (who were very good on the day).
