Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in early August on Sanibel Island which is on the southwest coast of Florida, right off of Fort Myers.

Time

This was in the morning around 6:30am. I found it much easier to get photos there at sunrise rather than sunset just because of how many people are on the beach during the day and into sundown.

Lighting

I just thought the lighting and color was beautiful hitting those huge clouds.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D850 using a Nikon 200-500mm lens. No tripod.

Inspiration

I was just walking down the beach thinking I was wanting to find a composition with the sand and water but when I saw the sun starting to light up those storm clouds I decided to put on my telephoto lens and just get the clouds by themselves. Then when I saw those birds flying in and out of the clouds I just started firing off shots as I tried to track them.

Editing

Not a whole lot. Mostly just some exposure, contrast and vibrance adjustments in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry a Nikon D850, a wide angle, and 24-70mm lens. Sometimes I throw in my 200-500mm if I am not feeling too lazy. I also have a tripod strapped to my bag as well.

Feedback

This photo / composition was not what I had in my minds eye or set out to take that morning. I wasn't even going to bring my telephoto lens with me but decided at the last minute, why not. That storm just popped up and I got lucky. So I would say be adaptable and if you have the room in your bag and energy to carry it bring as many tools as you can. You never know if a situation comes up where you will use a lens that you didn't think you would use.
