Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in John Bryan state park near Yellowsprings, Ohio. I was out playing with my new camera one morning in the fall and something about this spot caught my eye.

Time

I got to the park at around 6am wanting to try and get some morning shots of the waterfalls in the area. Walking along the trails for a few hours I came across this spot at around 9:30am and just really liked the colors of the leaves and how the trees were lined up. So I took the shot.

Lighting

Being as it was late morning around 9:30am the sun was out in it's full glory and I was headed out of the park as I wasn't sure I would get any shots with that golden moring light that I like so much. But when I came across this spot the density of the forest filtered the bright light just right so that it made me stop and appreciate the scene and then take the photo.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D7000, with an 19 - 200mm f/3.5 - 5.6 lens and a tripod.

Inspiration

I just really liked how the trees lined up. Especially how the two trees in the foreground kind of frame the scene. Then the somewhat of a gap in the background trees within that frame let the light filter through, to almost form a light path and illuminate the colors of the fall leaves.

Editing

I darkend the image a bit. Then did some dodging and buring to slightly exaggerate the highlights and shadows of how the light was hitting the tree trunks and forest floor. I also pushed the vibrance up a bit for the yellowish/orange leaves in the upper trees. Plus did a bit of selective shapening on a few of the tree bark that stood out to me. Then finished it off with a slight "orton" effect that I thought gave a good representation of how I felt when I was standing there admiring the scene.

In my camera bag

I currently have a Nikon D7000 with a 19 - 200mm f/3.5 - 5.6 lens. It's not much but I am just an amature photographer who enjoys hiking and exploring and hopefully getting a few decent shots once in a while. I also carry around a Vanguard SBH-100 tripod once in a while.

Feedback

I think you can find beautiful forests like this in most places of the world. I came to this park trying to capture a photo completely different in subject and in completely different lighting, but just sticking around and enjoying the hike and scenery allowed me to come upon this spot at this time of day and it all just came together for a photo that I really enjoy. So I would say if you didn't get what you were after at that particular spot or time of day just enjoy nature, explore, and you never know what you might come across.
