Forest ants eat just about any prey they can find in the forest: worms, beetles, grasshoppers, snails, etc. They are also active ' livestock breeders': they keep aphids as pets . The ants feed the aphids in exchange for honeydew, a sugar-rich substance that the aphids excrete and to which the ants are addicted. The forest ants 'milk' the lice using their feelers. In the spring the shepherd-workers bring their aphids to trees where they can feast on delicious plant juices, in the autumn the aphids go to the ant's nest to overwinter.
Forest ants live in gigantic anthills with an ingenious tunnel system inside. The average anthill, with several hundred thousand ants, is 40 cm. high.
