The fly can often be found on flowers to absorb nectar and pollen with the stigma-shaped proboscis. The larvae are not scavengers, but carnivorous or parasitic.
They develop exclusively on earthworms. The female lays her eggs at the entrance to the crawling tunnels of earthworms. The hatched larvae then go in search of the worm and penetrate its body. They kill the earthworm and are fully grown within a few days.
