This is an image I wanted to make for like ages. But somehow that didn't really happen. Off course you can always say that the sky could have been more dramatic and I would agree to that. But the issue is that till now the Swiss Alps have some pretty dark areas and that gives amazing opportunity of MilkyWay shot. If you get there in a cloudy day in the wish of a break, the MilkyWay will go out of the option. So in this dilemma in many cases I end up on the mountain lately in good weather days! Probably not the best. I should go out more in bad weather to get some more drama in the images.

However; I am happy to find this location and composition. It was not a very easy job. As this is kind of within the broken rocks. There are not really any trails to get there. I just went down following the rocks. The little rock climbing training of my early mountaineering days did help. So I put the camera on the panoramic head on panorama mode and started the exposure from the left. By the time the camera would come to this part, my job would be to quickly climb the rock and pose in a natural way. Going there quickly was a challenge. But I did manage to get the timing right after couple of attempts.

Now coming to the place. Well, I am not sure I need to explain about the largest glacier of Alps; that is 20 km in length, 800 meters in depth and 79 square kilometers in area. This famous Aletsch Glacier starts all the way from Jungfrau and ends here on the left. From this location you can see this spectacular view of the whole panoramic glacier.

Have a nice weekend.

Hope you will enjoy the picture.

Any suggestions or criticisms are always welcome.

Behind The Lens

Location

This video is taken at the largest glacier of Alps. The Great Aletch Glacier of Swiss Alps. Early in the morning with no one around except me and that giant glacier.

Time

It is a sunrise image. Wake up early at 2AM and hiked couple of hours stif uphill to get to the location and waited for the right light. All the effort paid off.

Lighting

Early morning is always magical in Swiss Alps if the weather condition is favorable and this was not an exception. A lovely warm light lit the mountain above the glacier where the glacier itself projected the blueish shadow. Was just perfect condition.

Equipment

Nikon D850 Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f/1.8G ED Lee Soft GND 1.2 Lee Square Circular Polarizer 2.5:1 Panoramic image with 9 vertical images stitched together in Photoshop.

Inspiration

I love to photograph the Swiss mountains and also love to go up to popular places at off time when they are only for mine and also get the opportunity to get the best light. This was my 4th attempt to get such image. All the previous attempts failed due to sudden change of weather which is very common at this part of the world. So very happy that finally I could capture the way I wanted.

Editing

Basic RAW workflow in camera raw. Some shadow highlights, curve, white balance and some vibrance, sharpening. Nothing special. Mostly basic processing.

In my camera bag

If I go out in nature for still photography I take with me the Nikon D850 with the 14 24 F2.8 and few primes like 24, 28, 38, 50 and 60. All 1.8 versions. So they are pretty light and small. I also take the 70 200 F4. Tripod, polarizer and GND filters with the filter kit. That is more or less my camera gear in the bag.

Feedback

Swiss Alps is an extraordinary place for photography. We normally make joke that photographing something stand out here is very difficult as anyone with a smartphone can take a cable car to go at the top of any mountain and click any direction to get great image. So to stand your image you need to go for the best light and composition. That means going to the place walking mostly or spend the night in a tent. Wake up early or stay awake late. Then the best luck with the weather will give you an amazing image and experience for the rest of your life. So be persistent and you will have the gift of great light.
