Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my backyard. This beautiful large Tom was displaying for a female in front of him.

Time

It was about 30 minutes before sunset.

Lighting

The warm sunlight brought out the full range of colors in the puffed up feathers of this mature Wild Turkey.

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D300 and 18-200 Nikon Zoom cranked out to 185mm (277mm film equivalent).

Inspiration

The magnificant colors, proud strutting and spread out tail feathers were so amazing. I grabbed my camera and was able to get several shots before the display ended.

Editing

Very little post processing was needed for this colorful well exposed image. Only some minor cropping, contrast, saturation and sharpening were needed needed.

In my camera bag

Normally I have several lenses of various focal lengths in my bag when I do planned photo shoots.

Feedback

The favorable lighting made all the difference. This was captured at one of the best times of day with the golden hour sunlight gently and gorgeously front lighting and illuminating the colorful feathers and seemingly bringing the bird to life in the image.
