Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Kuusamo, Finland. It is taken from a bear watching booth.

Time

In these booths, you have a certain mount of time that you can spend there, we went early in the evening and had to get out before midnight. It is really important to obey the timetable you are told, it's for your safety. The bears appeared about two hours after we arrived, this is one of the first pictures I took.

Lighting

The natural evening light is really nice, kind of soft and in the summer time in Finland the lights are on 24/7, so that helps a lot.

Equipment

I use Nikon D7000 body and usually Tamron 90mm f2.8 or Nikkor 50mm f1.8 with it.

Inspiration

It was my first time on the booth so I was really exited to even see the brown bears, not to mention taking photos of them! Amazing experience.

Editing

I am not into post-processing that much, I'm kind of "old school", I do only those things that you could do in an actual dark room. If something is in the photo, I don't remove it and if something isn't in the photo, I don't add it there. All I do is basic light, shadow and contrast adjustments.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7000, Tamron 90mm f2.8, Sigma 50mm f1.8, Nikkor 50mm and 35mm if I'm using the bigger bag :) Sometimes also Tamron 18-70mm or Sigma 24-70mm. Spare battery and memory card. And something to eat :)

Feedback

If you ever visit Finland (Lapland or the North Carelian parts) and have some extra time, you should definitely visit a bear watching booth! And if you don't have it on your bucket list, put it there NOW!
