.....This image is a composite taken in the southwest of Oklahoma, a night shot which features a carnival set against a backdrop of The Milky Way highlighting many famous nebulas that exist in The Great Rift that is composed of dark clouds, some of which are "dark nebulas" with an emphasis on the largest of all dark nebulas... The Great Dark Horse Nebula. The Great Dark Horse is easy to spot, just look to the right of The Milky Way and you will see a fully formed shadow of a horse ...legs and all!
....For the longest time, astronomers thought the dark patches were simply holes or gaps in the Milky Way, Now, they realize that in fact all that dark stuff is actually dark dust....which in the end obscures our view of the center and the other radial arms of our galaxy.

Great Rift, in astronomy, a complex of dark nebulae that seems to divide the bright clouds of the Milky Way Galaxy lengthwise through about one-third of their extent. From the constellation Cygnus, the rift reaches through Aquila and Sagittarius, where the centre of the Galaxy lies hidden behind it, to Centaurus.
